just downloaded the drumtools from the musiclab wesite tonight and ran the install for both fillin and slicy drummer. I go into sonar and create a midi file with nothing in it. Just blank. I then right click...

Well, to be honest the term virtual instrument has become a catch all for any instrument which can be replicated by a computer. This means it could be a sample it could be pure synthesis, it could be both.
