Simple, because the pickoffs you're using to get your signal (the inserts) are right after the mic pre, and before anything else (eq, fader). Ok. i'll try to 'splain this easily.
i used to run a mackie deck. i sent the main outs to my card.
any channel strips that i wanted to record i would disengage the alt 3/4 button.
