Opening files

I just bought a used Imac G3 and I am new to mac. When I go to open any file or folder it asks me to choose an application. When I try to find an app to open something all choices dead end. Am I doing something wrong or could it be that the original owner deleted a system or operating file by mistake when cleaning their stuff out of it? Thanks for your help!
