fostex DMT-8VL

i tried to record a song onto tracks 1 and 2 and altho' all monitors showed it was recording it didnt,this was from a line out from a simple cd player.then having switched it off it wont let me do anything other than reformat the hard disc which i have tried 3 times.any ideas,the manual has no trouble shooting advice much.
